No joke: 48 Wise drug suspects charged in Operation April Fools
Authorities dubbed the ninth "Street Sweeper"? drug crackdown sprung on April 1 in Wise County "Operation April Fools"? and the pun "? with emphasis on fools "? was intended.
There were no jokes afoot, however, as authorities targeted 48 individuals on various drug charges, primarily in the Big Stone Gap area.
"You can interpret that two ways,"? Wise County Commonwealth's Attorney Ron Elkins said of the title of the ninth Street Sweeper mass arrests that, since the first operation was launched two years ago, have led to charges against some 350 individuals.
"Really, this is the ninth leg of our Street Sweeper operations. We consider some of these people (targeted on April 1) to be some of your higher-level dealers. We're not trying to hide it. We're trying to climb to another level here."?
Illicit trade and use of controlled prescription medications remains the most vexing drug problem for the county, Elkins said.
"The supply is still pretty prevalent. But the most disturbing thing to me, personally, this is the first time we've encountered Suboxone,"? he said. "It's sort of like methadone, used for drug addiction treatment. It's relatively inexpensive and not too terribly hard to get. We hope it won't get to be a problem like OxyContin did, but we will see."? Elkins said the citizenry has been a growing ally in Wise County's fight against illicit drug use, with information supplied by private citizens helping to focus attention on suspicious activities in their neighborhoods.
"We thank our citizens for their help to fight the good fight, and we continue to encourage that,"? he said.
The latest mass arrests involved a joint investigation by the Wise County Sheriff's Office, Big Stone Gap Police Department, Norton Police Department, Wise Police Department, Virginia State Police, and the Southwest Narcotics Task Force.
Although it might seem as if practically every community has been visited by the Street Sweeper anti-drug roundup over the last two years, Elkins promised that is not the case.
"We've got a few towns we've really not covered yet,"? he said. "So if (drug dealers/traders) live there, beware."?
As of 3 p.m. Tuesday, 29 of the 48 individuals charged by the Multi-Jurisdictional Grand Jury had been taken into custody.
Those arrested and their charges include:

"? Angelo Swann, 37, 711 Peach St., Coeburn, distribution of Lortab.
"? Johnathan Weiant, 34, Alexandria Circle, Norton, distribution of cocaine and Endocet.
"? Tiffany Amanda Vanover, 20, 108 East 29th St., Big Stone Gap, distribution and conspiracy to distribute Suboxone.
"? Jonathan Pilkenton, 22, 1813 Dorchester Road, Norton, distribution of OxyContin and Suboxone.
"? Constance D. Mutter-Hislop, 43, 2829 East Second Ave., Big Stone Gap, three counts distribution of methadone.
"? Michael Wayne Lane, 37, Galloway's Trailer Park, 26th Street, Big Stone Gap, distribution of Lortab.

3 persons on that list at one time I called friend. Once again,I am reminded and thankful that I got out of that lifestyle and away from that circle of "friends"

There got to be a better of keeping tabs on prescription drugs. These aren't drugs folks are making in there bathroom. Anyways these arrests are a joke. You can look at these names find the court cases later on and most will have probation or charges dropped, nolle process, not prosecuted etc. "Johnathan Weiant" ive seen this guy almost on shedule in the fyi's of the kingsport paper.

Maybe they need a friend right now Mr. "live at the foot of the cross." You beat all I've ever seen. Quit bad mouthing people's goof- ups and try to be positive. I'll get bashed over this, but this needs to be addressed. You're always one of the first ones who comments on these busts. Since I've been in their shoes, It's not a very good time for these people.
